Make a "flame tamer" with aluminum foil that will prevent a pot of stew from burning when simmering for a long time on a gas range. Cut a large piece of foil and twist to form a large, thick foil rope. String it under and over the burner while the burner is cool. Place a pot of stew to simmer on the foiled burner. This will prevent the bottom of the stew pot from burning while simmering for an hour or two.
