Make a family tree using a variety of fruits to represent family members.
TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham is joined by family expert Dr. Bra Vada Garrett-Akinsanya, who shares ways to make learning about family history interesting for the whole family.
  • Study some maps and highlight areas where the family's ancestors lived.

  • Interview family members about family history and capture the interviews on a video recorder.

  • Make clay handprints of each family member, then write their name next to the handprint.

  • Look up old family customs and celebrate them with children.

  • Make a family tree or orchard out of construction paper.

  • Keep a family scrapbook full of family history such as birth announcements, marriage certificates and family photos.

  • Keep important documents and photographs in a fireproof box.

  • Study the culinary customs of the family, and make some meals based on those customs.
