Materials:
pickets
saw
scrap wood
wood screws
measuring tape
wood glue
finish nails
drill
Steps:
1. Cut four pickets into two-foot lengths. To make the back panel, set the pieces face down and line up the bottom edges until they're even.
2. Cut two pieces of scrap wood just short of the width of the back panel. Place one piece six inches from the top and the other six inches from the bottom to serve as crossbars for support. Pre-drill holes and glue the pieces in place. Secure them with screws.
3. Set the back panel aside and place the remaining three pickets flat on the table (these will be the two sides and center divider inside the cabinet that will hold the shelves in place). Measure and mark the desired shelf placement, taking the height of a CD case into account. Cut 12 pieces of scrap trim to the width of a picket to use as shelf brackets. Use wood glue and screws to attach the trim pieces to each side of the center divider and to one side of each side picket.
4. Set the center divider aside and turn the outer pickets on their side. Place the back panel on top with the crossbars facing out. Screw the side supports in place from behind.
5. For the base, cut a piece of scrap wood the length of the shelf and 1/4 inch wider than the width of a CD. Glue and screw it in place from the bottom into the side and back pickets.
6. Attach the center divider to the base and back panel with glue and screws.
7. Cut pickets to serve as shelves and set six pieces on top of the brackets.
